A practical approach for developing talent
Training Needs Assessment & Analysis
Two big talent problems have plagued manufacturers (and other industries) since prior to the COVID pandemic; 1) A lack of available employees and 2) A lack of developed skills or skill plan when a dedicated employee is found.
Chad Metcalf from Value Stream Solutions Inc will join us to take us through a practical approach and considerations for developing talent from day 1 of employment and through the long careers of your most senior. The training needs analysis is aligned with many of the well known problem solving methods: PDCA, 8D, Lean Thinking and so on. Understanding the need or outcome is the starting point to understand the current state, and then, identifying the gap between current state and future state. That gap can then be broken down into manageable pieces to develop employee skills and practice. For further detail, and a glimpse into some of our event, here are the steps we will be presenting.
The main goal is to determine the gaps between current skills and knowledge of employees and the skills and knowledge they need to perform their jobs effectively.
- Identifying Objectives: Determining the goals of the assessment, such as improving performance, enhancing skills, or preparing for new roles or technologies.
- Gathering Data: Collecting information about the current skills, knowledge, and abilities of employees. This can be done through surveys, interviews, observations, performance appraisals, and reviewing job descriptions.
- Analyzing Data: Evaluating the data to identify gaps between the current capabilities of employees and the required competencies. This analysis helps to pinpoint specific areas where training is needed.
- Prioritizing Training Needs: Once the gaps are identified, the next step is to prioritize them based on factors such as the impact on performance, the urgency of the need, and the resources available.
- Recommending Solutions: Developing a plan to address the identified training needs. This could include designing specific training programs, selecting appropriate training methods (e.g., workshops, online courses, on-the-job training), and setting timelines for implementation.
- Implementing Training: Executing the training plan by organizing and delivering the necessary training programs to the targeted employees.
- Evaluating Effectiveness: Assessing the effectiveness of the training programs through feedback, performance metrics, and follow-up assessments to ensure that the training objectives are met and that there is a tangible improvement in employee performance.
