Reducing the High Cost of Musculoskeletal Disorders

Office Ergonomics

The repetitive motions performed by employees in an office environment can significantly harm their long-term health. This course examines the importance of ergonomics — the methods of maintaining good form when working in an office — and identifies a variety of practices that strengthen employees’ health and efficiency at their desks.

Course Summary:

Until recently the health care, disability and productivity costs associated with workplace Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) have been reasonable enough that a comprehensive commitment to MSD prevention programs has not been the priority of Workers' Compensation Boards, Labour Ministries, insurance carriers and employers. However, escalating health care and disability costs have resulted in organizations such as the WSIB and MOL placing a much stronger emphasis on the prevention of workplace MSDs. This has created an environment where MSD prevention is not only a mandated element of any Health & Safety program but is also an effective method of maintaining and improving the financial performance of employers.

Discussed Topics:

  • Review of Injury Statistics in the Manufacturing Sector
  • Definition of Ergonomics
